New York Employees are Entitled to Paid Time Off For Voting

02 May New York Employees are Entitled to Paid Time Off For Voting

The New York Election Law was recently amended to require that employers must provide their employees (who are registered to vote) with up to three hours of paid time off on election days to allow them to exercise their civic duty and vote.  The employers may provide that the time off for voting must be at a specific time, such as the beginning or ending of the work day.  Employees must give their employers at least 2 working days’ notice of their intention to take time off to vote.  Employers must conspicuously post a copy of the law obligating them to provide time off to their employees for voting at least 10 working days before each election.

STATE LEGISLATION—NEW YORK—Workers may now take up to 3 hours paid leave to vote on election day, (May 1, 2019) (1)
